Harmony Museum's "WeihnachtsMarkt" German Christmas Market - Second Weekend in November, 2011
by Gwen Lutz
(Harmony Museum, Harmony, PA)
WeihnachtsMarkt is held on the second weekend of each November in the spirit of the traditional Christmas Markets of Germany.
Guests are treated to German music and dancers, homemade German food, self guided tours of Harmony Museum where they can learn about the German Seperatists that settled here over 200 years ago seeking religous freedom and the Menonite Germans that followed them.
Our beautiful 1800s stone wine cellar, hand crafted guns by local craftsman Charles Flowers, the oil boom, George Washington's stop in Harmony and more are all there for the visitor to see and learn about.
Wine tasting and German Gluhwein are a part of the festivities too. Take a ride on the horse drawn wagon around the National Historic Landmark town of Harmony, watch old-time craftsmen and women as they demonstrate their skills, browse through the high quality antique show and sale and visit over 40 artisans displaying their fine crafts.
Individual merchants around our quaint historic town offer a wonderful shopping experience including antiques, a bakery in a beautifully restored Harmonist building, a wonderful arts and crafts gallery, a coffee shop in a restored log cabin and much more.
The festival includes children's crafts in one of the Harmonist log cabins, quilting demonstration, old time miniature train display and spinners and weavers. Held rain or shine like the German festivals, WeihnachtsMarkt attracts thousands of visitors each year from the tri-state area and brings history and German traditions to life.
Historic Harmony is located 30 miles north of Pittsburgh at exits 87 & 88 off Interstate 79. For more information visit our website at:
